Frequently Asked Questions

How much do porcelain slabs cost?

The price of porcelain slabs can vary based on several key factors:

  1. Brand
  2. Slab thickness
  3. Color
  4. Surface finish (polished, matte, textured)
  5. Project design complexity
  6. Slab size and format
  7. Installation requirements

Each of these factors can influence the overall cost of your project. For an accurate quote tailored to your specific needs, we recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss your project in detail.

What is the thickness of porcelain slabs?

Porcelain slabs come primarily in 6MM (1/4"), 12MM (1/2"), and 2CM (3/4"). There are additional thickness options which are not as widely used: 4MM, 8MM, and 3CM. We primarily work with 12MM thick slabs.

What is your turnaround time?

The turnaround time for porcelain slab projects can vary depending on several factors:

  • Application: Whether it's for countertops, wall cladding, flooring, etc.
  • Project complexity: Simple installations vs. intricate designs or multiple areas
  • Project size: Larger projects may require more time

For standard residential projects, our typical turnaround time is 7 to 10 business days from templating to installation. However, more complex projects may require multiple phases and could extend beyond this timeframe.

During your consultation, we'll provide a more accurate timeline based on your specific project requirements. We always strive to balance efficiency with ensuring the highest quality results for your porcelain slab installation.

Do you have stock material?

We don't maintain our own inventory of porcelain slabs. However, we have established strong relationships with trusted vendors who carry extensive stock of high-quality porcelain slabs in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and finishes.

For materials not immediately available, our vendors can typically arrange quick shipping. This approach allows us to offer you a broader selection of the latest designs and ensures you receive fresh, high-quality materials for your project.

During our consultation, we can quickly check availability and lead times for the specific porcelain slabs you're interested in.

What type of prep work is needed for fireplace surrounds? Shower walls?

For fireplace surrounds and shower walls (vertical wall applications):

  1. Proper framing:
    • Studs should be 16 inches on center
    • Wood framing must be at least 3 inches thick
    • Use 20 gauge steel or thicker for metal framing
  2. Substrate:
    • Mechanically fasten a 1/2 inch backer board to the studs
  3. Surface flatness:
    • Achieve 1/8 inch flatness tolerance over 10 feet
    • Correct any protrusions or depressions in the backer board
  4. Waterproofing:
    • For shower walls, waterproofing must be completed before measuring
  5. Accessories:
    • Have TV mounts and fireboxes on site before prep work begins
  6. Plumbing:
    • For showers, finalize plumbing before prep work and ensure it accepts large format porcelain

A Mira Surfaces team member must inspect the prep work if completed by a third party to ensure it meets requirements.

How much gap do the seams need?

For vertical wall applications of large-format porcelain, such as fireplace surrounds or shower walls, the seams need a gap of 1/16 inch (approximately 1.6 mm). This small gap allows for proper installation while maintaining a nearly seamless appearance.
